30 Scary Movies to Ramp Up For Halloween

When you obsess over Halloween and you’re an avid cinephile, October is the perfect month to do a scary movie marathon! Between thriller, horror, slasher, and paranormal, there are thousands of movies from which to pick. I’ve sorted through many options and come up with 30 movies to help get you in the Halloween mood!

1. Ready or Not (2019)

This film is truly phenomenal and clever. It tops my list of the best horror movies.

2. A Quiet Place (2018)

3. Nosferatu (1922)

Because this film is almost 100 years old, I cannot provide a true trailer, but this fan-made trailer gives a glimpse into the terrifying world of Nosferatu, a vampire largely inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

4. Halloween (1978)

5. Greta (2018)

6. It (2017) & It: Chapter 2 (2019)

I put these two movies together because they are a continuation of one another which you could spend 6 hours binge-watching

7. The Shining (1980)

A Stephen King classic to give you nightmares.

8. The Ring (2002)

9. Searching (2018)

10. Friday the 13th (1980)

So much as the remakes and sequels are fairly good, the classic ‘Friday the 13th’ is the perfect film for this Halloween season.

11. Dawn of the Dead (1979)

12. Scream (1996)

A horror film from back before meta was common.

13. Saw (2004)

14. Escape Room (2019)

If you like escape rooms, the horror genre, and individualized fear, this is the film for you!

15. The Purge (2013)

‘The Purge’ may not be the best plot on the list, but it does provide some gruesome entertainment.

16. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

17. The Sixth Sense (1999)

‘I see dead people.’

18. Truth or Dare (2018)

Sometimes the movies that are campy and contain some goofy element can make for the most entertaining scary movies; that is the case for this Blumhouse Productions film.

19. Mama (2013)

20. Pledge (2018)

21. Emelie (2015)

This movie is one to frighten the parents in the crowd.

22. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

A classic in its own right, Rosemary’s Baby thrives on psychological thrills.

23. Hannibal (2001)

24. Panic Room (2002)

Jodie Foster, the queen of scary movies, shines in this home-invasion film.

25. Paranormal Activity (2007)

‘Paranormal Activity’ took the idea of found footage to a new level.

26. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

27. The Invitation (2016)

28. Cult of Chucky (2017)

You want to cry yourself to sleep because you are terrified of a doll killing you? Go for it! But, there is no way in hell I am watching this movie.

29. Hush (2016)

‘Hush’ is one of the smartest, best written, and most visually intriguing scary movies I’ve seen in a long time.

30. Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (2018)

Okay, so this one might not actually be too frightening. It is a family-friendly scary movie that is significantly better than its predecessor.
